Starbucks is expanding its technology operations in India by building a global capability center in Chennai. The company plans to employ about 800 technology workers at the center, according to the Tamil Nadu government.

The government has entered into an agreement with Starbucks for the center and did not provide details on the planned investment.

Chennai is already home to several major technology centers, including those of Citi, Barclays, and American Express. The city accounts for around 10% of global capability centers operating in India, according to the state government.

Starbucks' decision to establish a center in Chennai was influenced by factors such as the availability of skilled workers, lower employee attrition, and infrastructure, said Anand Varadarajan, the company's technology chief.
