Stocks Mixed as M&A Activity and Crude Oil Drop Boost Sentiment
The S&P 500 Index (SPY) gained +0.16% today, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DIA) fell -0.51%. The Nasdaq 100 Index (QQQ) rose +0.37%, supported by strong mergers and acquisitions activity. Schneider Electric agreed to acquire PTC Inc. for $22.6 billion, and C.H. Robinson Worldwide announced a $5.8 billion purchase of RXO. Additionally, a -1% drop in WTI crude oil prices eased inflation concerns, boosting market sentiment.
WTI crude oil prices (CLX26) declined more than -1% after Saudi Aramco reduced the price of its Arab Light crude to Asian buyers by $5 per barrel, exceeding expectations. The drop in oil prices also followed news that Saudi Arabia increased crude supplies through its East-West pipeline to 80% of capacity. Markets currently price in a 19% chance of a +25 basis point Fed rate hike at the October 27-28 FOMC meeting.
Overseas, the Euro Stoxx 50 rose +0.07%, while Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average surged to a three-month high, closing up +2.40%. The 10-year T-note yield increased +3.0 basis points to 5.300%, driven by supply pressures from upcoming Treasury auctions. European government bond yields also moved higher, with the 10-year German bund yield up +1.8 basis points to 3.480%.
Technology stocks led gains, with Microsoft (MSFT), Tesla (TSLA), Nvidia (NVDA), and Meta Platforms (META) all up more than +1%. Software stocks also climbed, with Autodesk (ADSK) rising more than +6%. PTC Inc. (PTC) surged more than +34% after Schneider Electric's acquisition announcement, while RXO Inc. (RXO) gained more than +24% following C.H. Robinson Worldwide's purchase agreement. Notable losers included C.H. Robinson Worldwide (CHRW), down more than -10%, and Nike (NKE), down more than -2% after a debt rating downgrade.
