Streaming Giants Unite in Lobbying Effort
The Streaming Access and Choice Alliance (SACA), a new policy coalition, has launched in Washington to lobby on behalf of streaming services. Founded by Amazon, Netflix, and YouTube, SACA aims to promote 'technology-neutral policies' that allow streaming companies to invest in various programming, including live sports.
The coalition, led by TechNet, a trade group representing large technology companies, will advocate for wider consumer access to content and more choice. According to Mike Ward, TechNet's senior vice president of federal policy and government relations, 'Americans want more content choices and flexibility in how and where they watch their favorite programming.'
The launch follows government scrutiny of sports leagues moving their rights to streaming services. The Justice Department and the Federal Communications Commission have opened an inquiry into the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961, which allows leagues to pool TV rights and sell them together.
