Strike Threat Looms Over Boeing's 777-9 Production Timeline
Boeing's 777-9 is nearing its debut, but its production timeline hangs in the balance due to a labor dispute between Boeing and the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) union. With over 620 orders on the books, the plane has accumulated more than 4,700 hours of flight testing, but a strike by engineers could stall certification.
The SPEEA union represents about 17,000 Boeing engineers and technical staff, who rejected the company's contract offer in August. The vote was not close, with roughly 64 percent of engineers and 72 percent of technical staff rejecting the offer. Strike authorization passed with support approaching 90 percent.
A strike by SPEEA members would significantly impact the certification process for both the 777-9 and the smaller 737 MAX 10. The union's members are responsible for designing, testing, and certifying aircraft, making their work critical to the planes' certification.
