Subscription Services Fill Prescription Gap as US Health Insurance Options Shrink

A growing number of Americans are turning to subscription-based services for prescription medications and health services due to rising costs and dwindling health insurance options. Amazon's RxPass, which offers access to around 50 generic drugs at a flat fee of $5 per month, has seen its customer base grow nearly threefold since its launch in 2023.

GoodRx's Companion plan, launched in May, offers discounts on telehealth and common vision, dental, and lab services, as well as access to over 250 generic drugs. The company's total subscription revenue increased 39% to $28.5 million in the second quarter from a year earlier.

Analysts say these monthly fee-based services can help consumers save money even when they have health insurance. 'If someone is on multiple drugs, this kind of subscription can make a lot of sense,' said Truist analyst Jailendra Singh.
