Sudbury Hosts Fire Prevention Week with Focus on Lithium-Ion Battery Safety
Greater Sudbury Fire Services is hosting open houses at local fire halls to educate residents on fire prevention and safety during Fire Prevention Week. The week-long event kicked off with activities at the James Jerome Sports Complex, focusing on changing habits and storage practices that reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires.
'Fire Prevention Week is an opportunity for residents to learn simple steps that can make a significant difference in preventing fires and protecting their families,' said Greater Sudbury Fire Services Chief Robert Grimwood. The city invites residents to attend open houses at local fire halls, where they can meet firefighters, take tours, and learn about fire prevention and emergency preparedness.
Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are found in common devices such as cell phones, laptops, e-bikes, scooters, and power tools. To prevent fires, the city recommends using chargers that come with devices, charging on hard surfaces, unplugging batteries once fully charged, and storing spare batteries away from metal objects.
The open houses will be held at various fire halls across the city, including Waters Fire Hall (Oct 5), Coniston Fire Hall (Oct 6), Levack Fire Hall (Oct 7), and Capreol Fire Hall (Oct 8). Residents can also visit Home Depot (Oct 4) and RONA on Marcus Drive (Oct 9) to speak with fire prevention staff.
