Susman Godfrey Accused of Funding Biased AI Report in Copyright Suit
OpenAI and Microsoft have filed to strike a report on AI-generated books' market dilution from a copyright infringement lawsuit. The companies claim that Susman Godfrey LLP, which represents the plaintiff book and news publishers, funded the research with a $100,000 'gift' to Stony Brook University Professor Tuhin Chakrabarty.
The firms argue that Susman Godfrey concealed its funding of the non-peer-reviewed study and presented it as independent research. They also claim that the evidence was relied upon outside of the expert-disclosure process.
OpenAI and Microsoft state that they have spent years in discovery and were unable to muster any evidence of harm, prompting them to accuse Susman Godfrey of attempting to sway the court with biased research.
