Swastika Graffiti Transformed into Flower Window in Connecticut Hospital

Columnist John Breunig recently spotted graffiti in a Connecticut hospital that caught his attention. The graffiti, a swastika scrawled above the urinal in ink, was transformed into a window with flowers just days later.

The original act of vandalism had drawn the eye, but it's unclear whether it was intended as hate speech or not. Breunig notes that the swastika has lost its original meaning and is now more likely to evoke feelings of disgust than admiration.

Despite being a powerful symbol of hate in 2026, the swastika can be seen in various forms around the world, often associated with Coca-Cola, the Boy Scouts, or Carlsberg beer. However, its connection to Nazi ideology makes it unmistakable when seen in public.

A stranger had intervened by transforming the swastika into a window with daisies, echoing the 'PaintBack Project' from Berlin where street artists covered up fascist symbols with new designs.
