Sydney Airport Ground Safety Incidents Raise Concerns Over Staffing and Operations

Sydney Airport has faced intense scrutiny after a third serious ground safety incident in just three weeks. On August 9, a Virgin Australia Boeing 737-800 was cleared for take-off from runway 34L when it spotted another Qantas Boeing 737-800 crossing the same runway from taxiway Lima.

The pilots immediately reduced thrust and stopped the aircraft about one kilometre before the intersection of the two runways. The incident occurred just hours after a close call involving a Jetstar Airbus A320 that braked sharply to avoid a Qatar Airways Boeing 777 being towed across the apron, causing a minor wrist injury to a cabin crew member.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has launched an investigation into the latest incident, classifying it as a runway incursion and rejected take-off. The ATSB will examine recorded data, interview witnesses, and gather evidence to determine the cause of the incident.

Airservices Australia is cooperating with the ATSB and other stakeholders to address concerns about staffing levels and controller shift coverage at Sydney Airport. Chief executive Rob Sharp has been called upon by the federal transport minister to provide assurances about the reliability and safety of operations at the airport.
