Synopsys Teams Up with Amazon on Custom-Chip Partnership

Synopsys is expanding its silicon intellectual property business in partnership with Amazon. Under their new multi-year agreement, Synopsys will provide Amazon with custom-designed chips optimized for specific applications. This deal marks an extension of their 15-year relationship and builds on Amazon's existing use of Synopsys' electronic design automation tools.

Amazon plans to increase its use of Synopsys' IP, including designs specifically tailored for particular tasks rather than relying solely on general-purpose building blocks. The company will also expand its use of Synopsys' EDA tools and simulation technologies. This partnership aims to support Amazon's custom-silicon program, which began with the introduction of the Graviton chip in 2018.

The agreement between Synopsys and Amazon goes beyond providing underlying IP. They plan to collaborate on multiphysics solutions for Trainium and Graviton processors, analyzing how factors like heat, power, and mechanical effects interact within increasingly complex chips and systems. The companies will also develop custom agentic AI capabilities for Amazon's engineering teams.
