Tech Giants Bet Big on Deployment Capabilities for Enterprise AI
As enterprise AI moves from pilot to production, several major players are investing heavily in deployment capabilities. Microsoft, AWS, and Cognizant have each launched dedicated units to put engineers directly inside client operations.
The 'frontier AI' term now encompasses not just the models themselves but also the organisations being built to integrate them with legacy infrastructure and deliver business outcomes.
Microsoft's $2.5 billion investment in Microsoft Frontier Company aims to embed 6,000 industry and engineering experts directly at customer organisations. The unit will combine deep industry knowledge, change management, and continuous improvement experience with enterprise-grade AI engineering expertise.
AWS has adopted a similar approach with its Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) organisation, backed by a $1 billion investment. FDE sees teams of five to six engineers work on 45-day sprints, using an AI-Driven Development Lifecycle that pairs AI agents with human oversight.
