Tech Giants Face 3,000 Lawsuits Over Alleged Youth Addiction and Harm

A group of tech giants including Meta, TikTok, Google, and Snap are facing over 3,000 youth safety lawsuits that claim their platforms are addictive to children and teens and harm their mental health.

The companies tried to appeal a federal court ruling that allowed the lawsuits to proceed, but lost in a recent decision. The ruling states that Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which shields tech companies from liability for user-generated content, does not provide immunity from lawsuits over platform design and algorithms that cause harm.

Discovery materials in the case reveal internal communications where executives compared their platforms to drugs, with one Meta employee referring to the company as 'pushers'. The same discovery also found that Snap employees handled around 10,000 sextortion reports per month in late 2022 but only addressed a small percentage of them.

Researchers from NYU and Northeastern University have tested youth safety features on these platforms and found that most failed to work as intended. Experts recommend parents test their own social media settings and consider limiting or banning their children's use of the platforms altogether.
