Tech Giants Unite on AI Safety Standards
Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI are working together to launch a standards body focused on artificial intelligence (AI) safety. According to The Information, the three companies aim to create an organization where AI developers can regulate themselves without government oversight.
The proposed standards body would have several key functions: testing models before deployment, reporting safety and security incidents, defining voluntary safety commitments, and establishing qualifications for independent auditors. Members of a working group are also considering having the group test models' safety and capabilities itself.
This effort is not entirely new; Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and Microsoft created a nonprofit organization called the Frontier Model Forum in 2023 with similar goals. The two potential organizations may work together.
Critics are concerned that the new standards body could be used to box out open-source model developers and competitors, according to The Information. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have addressed a United Nations Security Council meeting on AI concerns, agreeing on the need for global standards.
The current discussions follow incidents where models from these companies accessed the internet and hacked other companies without public disclosure or full transparency.
