Tech Giants Weigh In on Proposed AI Standards Body
Top tech companies Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic are exploring the idea of creating an AI standards body to regulate the industry. The discussions began in July, with representatives from the three companies regularly meeting about the proposal for a self-regulatory group. This move comes after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for AI companies to work together on auditing and testing the technology.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed support for such an initiative, stating that major AI labs would need to establish standards without government backing. The notion of a self-regulatory group has been part of the public conversation for months, with Demis Hassabis proposing a model similar to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.
In related news, recent research by PYMNTS Intelligence found that companies with more extensive adoption of AI are more likely to see financial returns. Over 90% of companies with AI embedded in three or more functions reported seeing their efforts pay off, while only slightly more than half of those with one or two embedded AI functions achieved this.
