Tech Sector May See Increased Volatility Amid Hedge Fund Losses
The technology sector may experience increased volatility and reliance on retail investors following a significant loss in July for tech-focused hedge funds, according to JPMorgan Chase & Co.
Preliminary data from Pivotal Path indicates that these hedge funds lost more than 10% in July, excluding Situational Awareness, which was forced to sell its public stock portfolio after a sharp decline in semiconductor and technology stocks.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index shed 21% in July, its worst month since 2008, as investors rotated out of top AI performers amid concerns about heavy spending.
JPMorgan's strategists believe that this loss may lead to more stringent risk management frameworks and concentration limits for hedge funds, limiting their capacity to hold volatile technology stocks. This could make the tech trade even more dependent on retail investors and susceptible to market swings.
