Teen Drops Lawsuit Against Social Media Companies Ahead of Trial
A lawsuit filed by a 15-year-old girl from New Jersey against social media companies Meta, Google, and Snap has been dropped ahead of trial. The plaintiff, identified as P.M-Y., claimed that the platforms' owners contributed to her social media addiction, depression, and self-harm.
The case was one of three 'bellwether' cases selected for trial in October, but it will no longer proceed due to the plaintiff's decision to drop her claims. TikTok, which was also a defendant in the case, had previously settled with the plaintiff.
Meta and Google have denied the allegations, stating that they take extensive steps to keep teens and young users safe on their platforms. The companies said that the plaintiff dropped her claims without any payment.
