Treasury Secretary's Iran Sanctions Threat Sparks Market Selloff

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's comments on Thursday about imposing 'the toughest sanctions in history' on Iran sent shockwaves through global markets, contributing to a sharp selloff that saw major indexes decline by as much as 1.32%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average led the decline, falling 1.32% at close, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite also ended the session down 0.87% and 1%, respectively.

The selloff was compounded by rising Treasury yields, with the U.S. 30-year Treasury yield climbing to 5.251% and the 10-year Treasury yield reaching 4.704%. This increase in yields sparked concerns about inflation, which weighed on investor sentiment and fueled the sharp decline in stocks.

However, overnight, U.S. stock futures edged higher, with the Dow futures up 0.01%, S&P 500 futures rising 0.08%, and Nasdaq-100 futures increasing by 0.22%. This rebound was likely driven by a combination of factors, including a slight decline in global oil prices and a surge in Bitcoin prices.

Among individual stocks, Marathon Digital Holdings Inc. (MARA) and Coinbase Global Inc. (COIN) saw significant gains, with MARA up over 15% at close and COIN rising by nearly 10%. This increase in cryptocurrency-related stocks was likely linked to the surge in Bitcoin prices, which reached nearly $75,000.

Walmart Inc. (WMT), on the other hand, continued its decline, falling more than 9% at close after posting weaker-than-expected quarterly results and flagging a softer consumer backdrop due to elevated fuel costs.
