Treasury Yields Rise Despite Bond Buyback, Oil Prices Weigh on Market
The stock market indexes, including the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500, fell on Wednesday morning as Treasury yields rose despite a tripled bond buyback by the Treasury Department.
The Dow slipped 0.8%, while the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.7% and the S&P 500 dropped 0.5%. Only five of the Dow's 30 stocks were higher, but not by much.
The Treasury tripled its longer-dated debt buyback to $6 billion, in an attempt to keep the bond market liquid. However, yields rose anyway, with the 10-year yield climbing about 4 basis points to approximately 4.85% and the 30-year yield rising above 5.3%.
Oil prices also contributed to the market's decline, with Brent crude increasing by about 3.4% to $101.25, its first trip above $101 since July.
However, Meta Platforms bucked the trend, rising 6.3% after unveiling Muse, a free AI assistant for U.S. users. The move was seen as both innovative and threatening to incumbent AI providers, with Alphabet's stock falling 2.7% and Amazon taking a 2.3% hit.
