Trump Lawsuits Against Banks Highlight Challenges of Proving Political Debanking
A new development in President Donald Trump's lawsuit against Capital One has brought attention to a separate $5 billion case against JPMorgan Chase, shedding light on the challenges of proving 'political debanking' in court.
Capital One requested that a federal judge in Miami dismiss Trump's trust and affiliated businesses' lawsuit, which alleges the bank closed over 300 accounts due to political bias following the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
The bank denies this claim, stating its account rules allowed for termination of relationships without notice for any reason.
Similar contractual issues are at play in Trump's lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase, which claims the bank terminated longstanding banking relationships due to his conservative political views and placed him on a blacklist shared with other banks.
