Trump's 'Lake America' Renaming Sparks Outrage and Confusion

President Trump's executive order to rename Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' has sparked controversy and confusion. The order, signed amid his trade war with Canada, cited the lake's natural resources and historical ties to the U.S.'s early development. The move is seen as a symbolic gesture by some, but has been met with resistance from Canadian officials and indigenous communities.

The renaming of the Great Lake was implemented in Google Maps over the weekend, reflecting the changes made by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). However, this change only affects users within the United States, while those in Canada continue to see the lake's original name. International users will now see both names.

The Seneca Nation, one of the six nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, has called on Trump to rescind the order, citing the 1794 Treaty of Canandaigua, which established their boundaries as 'beginning on Lake Ontario'. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also denounced the name change, referencing the Wendat Nation's word for the lake, Ontari'io, meaning 'the lake is beautiful, the lake is big.'
