Semiconductor stocks have been major beneficiaries of the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, with Nvidia and Micron leading the charge in producing GPUs and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for training generative AI models. However, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) stands out as a more attractive long-term investment due to its foundry capabilities, which are essential for manufacturing chips regardless of the architecture.
Nvidia faces growing competition from its own customers, who are developing custom silicon optimized for their AI workloads. Meanwhile, Micron could face pricing pressure and eroding profit margins as memory supply increases. TSMC, on the other hand, benefits from the versatility of manufacturing chips for various architectures, making it a more resilient player in the AI infrastructure era.
TSMC's third-quarter earnings report highlighted its strong position, with $46.7 billion in revenue, a 41% year-over-year growth, and impressive margins. The company expects AI-driven momentum to continue, projecting Q4 revenue between $52.3 billion and $54.3 billion as its 2-nanometer technology ramps up.
TSMC's unique proposition lies in its exposure to a broad range of advanced chip architectures, robust profitability, and potential for long-term upside. While the Motley Fool Stock Advisor team did not include TSMC in their top 10 stocks, the company's dominant position in leading-edge manufacturing and indispensable role in the AI value chain could justify a higher earnings multiple in the long run.
