TSMC: The Unseen Giant Driving the AI Revolution
TSMC, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, is the backbone of the global computer chip manufacturing industry and a key player in the AI revolution. With a market capitalization of $2.4 trillion, TSMC is the largest company in the sector and supplies chips to major technology companies such as Nvidia, Apple, and Intel.
TSMC's dominance in the industry can be attributed to its ability to produce advanced computer chips at scale. The company is contracted by hyperscalers for contract manufacturing of their own computer chips used in AI cloud computing. In fact, most of Apple's computer chips are made by TSMC.
The company's revenue was $143 billion over the past 12 months and rose 34% year-over-year last quarter. The high-performance compute (HPC) segment, which accounts for 66% of the overall business, saw a 20% increase in demand quarter-over-quarter.
TSMC's profitability is one of its key strengths, with an operating margin of 60% last quarter. This is higher than most software companies and translates to $86 billion in total profit. The company is also diversifying its manufacturing operations into the U.S. and other countries, investing $265 billion in U.S. factories alone.
