UK Visa Norms Hinder Indian Nurses' Migration Pathways

For nearly three decades, nursing has offered Indian professionals a clear route to professional growth and financial stability in the UK. However, this pathway is rapidly narrowing for new generations of nurses due to tightening visa norms and hiring slowdowns.

Agimol Pradeep, a Kerala-born nurse who rose to become Senior Transplant Coordinator at King's College Hospital, reflects on his own journey as an example. He left India nearly 30 years ago when the UK actively recruited overseas healthcare workers for its National Health Service (NHS). However, successive policy changes have raised barriers for foreign healthcare workers, including higher English-language requirements and stricter sponsorship compliance.

The Health & Care Worker visa applications fell by 65% as a result of these changing norms. Pradeep fears that this will stop migration for the next couple of years. 'The positive side is that more homegrown nurses are coming into the system,' he said, 'but the negative side is that it is going to stop migration.'
