United Flight Diverted After Passenger Dies on Board
A 71-year-old passenger died on board a United Airlines flight from Tokyo to Denver after experiencing a medical emergency. The Boeing 787-9 aircraft, with registration N24980, was diverted to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) upon arrival.
The incident occurred on September 29 aboard UA flight 142, which had departed from Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT) eight minutes behind schedule at 4:38 PM. The plane traveled over 5,787 miles nonstop before the passenger experienced a medical event.
Medical personnel met the aircraft in Seattle and pronounced the passenger dead after assessment. The cause of death was listed as hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and narrowed arteries that put extra strain on the heart and blood vessels.
The plane continued to Denver after formalities were completed, departing from Seattle at 11:10 AM and arriving in Denver three hours and two minutes later at 3:12 PM. United Airlines follows strict protocols for medical emergencies on board, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use.
