UnitedHealth Group Inc., parent of Optum Insight, is investing heavily in artificial intelligence to fuel growth. The company plans to spend nearly $1.5 billion on AI-related initiatives in 2026, with about one-third earmarked for software products and platforms.

This move supports a broader shift toward an AI-first model, which could lead to new revenue streams while improving healthcare workflows. Optum Insight is expanding its AI capabilities across various areas, including autonomous coding, digital prior authorization, real-time payer-provider interfaces, and clinical quality and safety tools.

Early traction is seen in digital prior authorization, where AI achieved a 96% first-pass approval rate with human review retained for cases not approved. The solutions could strengthen Optum Insight's value proposition as payers and providers seek to reduce administrative costs.
