UnitedHealthcare CEO Killer Pleads Guilty, Faces Life in Prison

Luigi Mangione has pleaded guilty to two federal charges related to the fatal shooting of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. The killing took place on December 4, 2024, outside a hotel where an investor conference was being held.

Mangione, 28, said in court that he researched details about the annual investor conference after suffering a broken back and navigating the health insurance system. He then used a 3-D printer to make part of a gun and traveled to New York with the intent of killing Thompson.

The guilty plea will likely allow Mangione to avoid a federal trial, but he still faces sentencing on December 18 for each count, which could result in a maximum sentence of life in prison. The Manhattan US attorney's office has stated that they will seek a sentence of life imprisonment.
