UnitedHealthcare Faces Multi-Million Dollar Fine Over Alleged Medicare Billing Scandal
A federal audit has uncovered widespread overbilling by UnitedHealthcare, one of America's largest health insurance companies. The company allegedly inflated its Medicare billing claims by at least $46.9 million between 2020 and 2021.
The audit found that most of the medical records analyzed did not support the diagnostic codes submitted to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
This is not the first time UnitedHealthcare has faced scrutiny over its billing practices. In a separate incident, it was revealed that a Minnesota-based subsidiary, Optum, was hired to review the state of Minnesota's Medicaid program compliance.
