UnitedHealth's Medical Care Ratio: A Key Metric to Watch in Q3 Earnings
UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) is set to report its third-quarter financial results on October 13, and investors will be closely monitoring several key metrics. One number that management has been working hard to bring down is the medical care ratio, which measures the percentage of insurance premiums paid out in claims.
The federal government requires health insurers like UnitedHealth to spend at least 85% of premium dollars on medical care and healthcare quality improvement. If they exceed this threshold, it can affect profitability. In the second quarter, UnitedHealth's medical care ratio fell to 86.7% from 89.4% a year earlier.
The company attributes the decrease to benefit design and pricing discipline, as well as adjustments to its member mix. Investors will be watching to see if UnitedHealth can maintain this lower ratio or even push it down further in the third quarter.
