US-Canada Trade War Escalates with Lake Name Change Controversy

The recent name change of Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' has sparked controversy in the US-Canada trade war. In response to President Donald Trump's executive order, Apple and Google Maps have updated their labels to reflect the new name for users within the United States. However, this move has been met with resistance from Canada, where the lake is still referred to as Lake Ontario.

The change was announced last week by Trump, who directed the Interior Department to update the lake's name in the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). Apple and Google Maps have since implemented the change, citing their long-standing policy of using names assigned by the GNIS. 'People using Maps in the U.S. will see ‘Lake America,’ those in Canada will continue to see ‘Lake Ontario,’ and those outside of the U.S. and Canada will see both names,' said a Google spokesperson.

Not all map providers have followed suit, however. MapQuest has refused to change Lake Ontario's label, instead giving users the option to name the lake 'whatever you want' through a separate online tool. This decision has been met with a surge in downloads for the app, which topped the charts of free apps with new downloads in both the U.S. and Canada on Apple's App Store.
