For decades, Wall Street and China enjoyed a close relationship, with top American financiers granted rare access to Beijing's leadership. Former Goldman Sachs chief Henry Paulson, Blackstone co-founder Stephen Schwarzman, and Bridgewater founder Ray Dalio were among those who benefited from this connection.

However, this 'honeymoon period' has come to an end. Private meetings with the top leadership have largely diminished, even as Beijing gradually opens its capital markets.

Christopher Marquis, Sinyi professor of Chinese management at Cambridge Judge Business School, believes that China's economy no longer needs foreign bankers' capital and expertise.

The shift has raised questions about Wall Street's ability to maintain its bridge to Beijing amid a changing US-China relationship.
