US Retail Sales Drop 0.6% in July, Market Expectations Missed
US retail sales declined by 0.6% in July, marking the largest drop since May last year and falling short of market expectations of a 0.1% increase.
The decrease was attributed to several factors, including the waning impact of government tax rebates, Amazon's decision to move its Prime Day promotion from July to June, which pulled forward consumer demand, and lower gasoline prices in July affecting gas station sales.
Automakers also reported a decline in vehicle and parts sales, with this category falling 1.8% month-on-month after rising 1.9% in June.
Despite the decline, economists believe that household wealth driven by stock market gains may continue to support consumer spending.
