US stock indexes closed mixed on Monday as investors await several market-moving events this week. The S&P 500 slipped 0.3% to 7,652.86 after falling from its record set earlier in August. In contrast, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.3% to 53,417.16.

The Nasdaq composite fell 0.8%, while smaller companies tracked by the Russell 2000 index dropped 0.8%. Despite these declines, all four major indexes are still up for the year: the S&P 500 is up 11.8%, the Dow is up 11.1%, the Nasdaq is also up 11.8%, and the Russell 2000 has gained 20.7%.

Investors are waiting for Nvidia's profit report on Wednesday, which could provide insight into the strength of the AI boom. Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh will give a speech on Friday as pressure mounts for him to hike interest rates to curb inflation.
