US Stocks Rise as Oil Prices Fall and Treasury Yields Drop
US stock indexes rose on Thursday, driven by falling oil prices and lower Treasury yields. The S&P 500 climbed 1.1%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.7% and the Nasdaq composite gained 1.7%. The increase came after the Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time under new Chair Kevin Warsh, indicating policymakers' focus on controlling inflation.
Oil prices declined for a second straight day, with Brent crude futures falling almost 3% to $102.90 per barrel and US West Texas Intermediate crude down 1.8% to $100.62. Tech stocks also contributed to the market's advance, with Nvidia and Amazon each rising nearly 2%. The cryptocurrency sector saw gains as well, following a five-year exemption on tokenised stock trading announced by US securities regulators.
Gold prices rose on Thursday, supported by easing oil prices and a lower US dollar. Spot gold was up 2.4% at $4,364.29 per ounce, while silver gained 3.9% to $65.44 per ounce.
