US Stocks Stage Comeback, But Tech Sector Lags Amid Yields Surge
The US stock indexes staged a comeback on Friday after a rough session earlier in the week. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were set to break their three-week winning streak, while the Dow was headed for its second consecutive weekly loss.
Healthcare and financials sectors led the gains, with Robinhood advancing nearly 13% and Coinbase Global adding 9.8%. Bitcoin-hoarder Strategy rose 7.2%, as bitcoin touched a high not seen since late May.
Tech stocks were mixed, with Alphabet and Microsoft gaining about 1% each, while Nvidia and Amazon.com dropped 0.3% each. The surge in longer-dated Treasury yields had weighed on tech stocks all week.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's announcement that the government could further increase its Treasury repurchases provided some relief, but market sentiment remained cautious due to concerns over ballooning government debt and higher financing costs.
