US Stocks Surge on Easing Geopolitical Tensions and Lower Oil Prices
The US stock market started August on a strong note as investors welcomed easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, sharply lower oil prices, and continued strength in technology shares. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed more than 600 points, while the S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite, and Russell 2000 all posted gains of more than 1%. Technology stocks led the rally, with Amazon surpassing a $3 trillion market capitalization. Boeing also gained after regulatory progress involving the 737 MAX 7 aircraft.
The decline in crude oil prices immediately reduced concerns that inflation could accelerate again during the second half of the year. Energy costs affect nearly every sector of the economy, and as oil prices fell, investors shifted money into sectors that generally benefit from lower fuel costs. While geopolitical risks remain, Monday's trading reflected optimism that further escalation might be avoided.
Emerson Electric, Ameren, Stifel Financial, Commerce Bancshares, Enterprise Financial Services, Post Holdings, BellRing Brands, and Olin all benefited from the market rally. The Missouri banking sector also saw gains as regional banks continue to monitor interest-rate policy closely.
