Vance Calls H-1B Visa Program 'Completely Broken' Amid Criticism of Misused System
US Vice President JD Vance has expressed strong criticism towards the H-1B visa program, calling it 'completely broken'. He stated that companies are misusing the system to replace American workers with lower-paid foreign employees.
Vance emphasized the distinction between hiring highly skilled professionals and using H-1B visas for cost-cutting purposes. He gave an example of replacing an accountant making $60,000 a year with one earning $45,000 a year, saying this 'isn't using the programme to bring in a genius' but rather 'destroying American jobs and defrauding the American people'.
Vance also defended the Trump administration's introduction of a $100,000 payment requirement for certain H-1B petitions involving workers outside the US. He claimed this measure was intended to discourage companies from hiring cheaper foreign labor.
However, the fee is currently blocked following a federal court ruling. The Trump administration has been pursuing broader changes to the H-1B system, including a weighted selection system that gives greater weight to higher-paid positions.
