Visa and Mastercard to Pay $167.5 Million Over Alleged ATM Fee Rules
A class-action lawsuit has led to a $167.5 million settlement between Visa and Mastercard over alleged rules that kept fees higher at independent ATMs in the US.
The settlement, which still requires court approval, claims that the companies' rules caused higher fees for cash withdrawals from these types of machines, often found at gas stations, hotels, and convenience stores.
To be eligible for a share of the settlement, individuals must have paid an ATM fee between October 24, 2007, and August 14, 2026. The withdrawal must have come from a deposit account using an ATM or PIN-debit card, but credit card cash advances and prepaid card transactions are excluded.
The amount each person receives will depend on the number of valid claims filed. Claims can be submitted online or by mail by February 10, 2027, for potential payment after court approval and any appeals are resolved.
