US-based pharmacy chain Walgreens is expanding its operations in India by establishing a new Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. The centre will focus on technology and business services, with plans for further expansion in subsequent years.

The GCC is expected to create more than 250 jobs in its first year, according to a statement from Walgreens India. This move comes as global giants such as Citi, Barclays, and American Express already operate tech centres in Chennai.

GCCs have evolved beyond providing low-cost back-office support, with companies using these centres to support headquarters through higher-value functions including finance, software development, and R&D. This shift reflects the growing importance of technology and innovation in business operations.
