Wall Street Slumps as Oil Prices Soar and Bond Yields Rise

Stocks on Wall Street experienced a broad decline on Tuesday due to rising oil prices and increasing bond yields, which are causing concerns about stubbornly high inflation. The S&P 500 index fell 0.7%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.8% and the Nasdaq composite slid 1%. The technology sector bore the brunt of the losses, with Nvidia, Amazon, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) experiencing significant declines.

The ongoing sell-off in US government bonds is also putting pressure on stocks. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.79% from 4.75%, while the yield on the 2-year Treasury increased to 4.39% from 4.34%. This rise in yields indicates that investors are demanding a higher return from Treasurys due to growing risk.

The US debt has surpassed $40 trillion, with defense costs and interest on the burgeoning deficit making up an enormous share of federal spending. Higher oil prices have been driving inflation, with Brent crude rising 4.6% to settle at $94.65 and US oil climbing 5.2% to $90.22 per barrel.

The Federal Reserve is expected to raise interest rates before the year's end in an effort to combat inflation, which remains above 3%. The central bank will receive more updates on inflation ahead of its upcoming September meeting, while also monitoring the jobs market this week.
