Alphabet's AI Bet Leaves Owners Wondering: Will $277 Billion Cash Return Reappear?
Alphabet's GOOGL stock has been quietly returning billions of dollars to its owners over the past five years, making it one of the top cash-returning companies in the market. With a total payout of $277 billion, Alphabet dwarfs the median S&P 500 company's return of $5.7 billion. The vast majority of this payout came through share repurchases, with $255 billion and another $22 billion paid as dividends.
The company's advertising business tied to Search and YouTube has been a major driver of this growth, posting a 33% operating margin over the last twelve months. In its most recent quarter, management reported that Search and other revenue grew 17%, while YouTube ads grew 13%. However, Alphabet's current strategy is shifting towards investing heavily in artificial intelligence, which consumes cash at an incredible rate.
The company's capital expenditure guidance has been updated to a range of $195 billion to $205 billion for the full year 2026, driving a negative free cash flow of $5.9 billion in the second quarter. Whether Alphabet's large AI bet can pay for itself will be decided by the Google Cloud segment, which is showing explosive growth with revenue up 82% in the last quarter.
