Walmart Settles Opioid Case for $50M, Reduces Litigation Overhang
Walmart (NASDAQ: WMT) has reached a $50 million settlement with the Justice Department to resolve a civil case accusing its pharmacies of unlawfully filling opioid prescriptions.
The figure represents about 0.43% of Walmart's net income for the six months ended July 31, 2026, when the company generated approximately $11.7 billion in profit.
Prosecutors initially described the case as potentially generating billions of dollars in civil penalties, but a federal judge narrowed the scope of the government's case in 2024, strengthening Walmart's negotiating position and reducing the potential price tag.
The agreement requires no admission of liability from Walmart and includes compliance obligations that impose real costs on the company's pharmacy network, such as tighter oversight of controlled substance dispensing and a hotline for reporting suspicious prescription activity.
