Walmart Shares Rise 2% Amid Strong E-Commerce and Advertising Growth
Walmart Inc. (NASDAQ: WMT) saw its shares climb 2% during mid-day trading on Tuesday, reaching a high of $107.55 before closing at $107.20. This rise came despite a 14% decline in trading volume compared to the average session. The stock had previously closed at $105.07.
Several positive developments contributed to the stock's upward movement. Walmart Connect, the company's advertising arm, reported a 43% revenue increase excluding VIZIO, while U.S. e-commerce sales rose 24% year over year in the second quarter of fiscal 2027. The company is also expanding its television advertising reach through a partnership with Warner Bros., which could enhance higher-margin revenue streams.
Analysts remain bullish on Walmart's prospects. Wells Fargo adjusted its target price to $120 from $140 but maintained an "overweight" rating. BTIG Research set a $140 target price with a "buy" rating, while Cantor Fitzgerald and KeyCorp also recommended buying the stock. Overall, the consensus rating is a "Moderate Buy" with a target price of $131.74.
However, some cautionary notes were present. Walmart's valuation, with a P/E ratio of 38.70 and a PEG ratio near 4, suggests that substantial growth may already be priced in. Additionally, insider sales by executives like EVP Christopher Nicholas and CEO John Furner raised questions about confidence in the stock's near-term performance.
