Walmart's stock surged nearly 2.8% to $109.015 on Thursday as the Justice Department broadened its investigation into beef pricing across the grocery sector.

The government's review, which is an investigative inquiry rather than a formal accusation, has contacted eight retailers including Walmart, Costco, and Amazon.

Walmart's dominance in the grocery market is underscored by its $187.9 billion in revenue during its second quarter, with first-half inventory reaching $61.6 billion.

The retailer's ability to absorb cost pressures is seen as a structural advantage over smaller competitors, despite stubborn food inflation posing a margin challenge for Walmart.
