Wayfair, a global home retailer, is leveraging AI to transform its search strategy and stay ahead of competitors. According to CMO Paul Toms, the company's biggest opportunity lies in connecting with consumers before they have active shopping intent.

To achieve this, Wayfair is focusing on building relevance and consideration through various channels, including YouTube and live sports. The goal is to be present throughout the customer journey, not just when intent already exists.

With a vast marketplace catalog of over 40 million items, product data integrity and accuracy are crucial for search performance. Toms explained that AI allows Wayfair to manage rich product data at scale, providing accurate information on products even in the shoulder or tail of its catalog.

Wayfair is using Google's Gemini AI models to test dimension validation and ensure data accuracy. The company also has a suite of AI QA tools to cross-validate data, which is critical for its business as the number one cause for returns on large items is that they don't fit through the door.
