Waymo Secures Robotaxi Permits in Las Vegas, Boosting Alphabet Stock
Alphabet's stock rose by approximately 1.1% to $344.42 on Friday morning, driven by Waymo's latest breakthrough in securing permits for robotaxi operations in Las Vegas. This marks another significant step towards turning Waymo's technology into a scalable transportation business.
The addition of Las Vegas as a proving ground for Waymo's services is seen as a positive development, with the company gaining more experience navigating local regulators and accumulating operating data with each new market it enters.
Alphabet's financial muscle, fueled by Google's advertising machine and the rapid growth of its Cloud business, allows the company to play the long game in developing Waymo's technology. The second-quarter revenue surge of 24% to $119.8 billion, with Cloud revenue rocketing 82% to $24.8 billion, underscores this capability.
However, the stock is no longer considered a bargain, trading near 17 times trailing earnings and 36.2% above the estimated $252.87 GF Value. Investors are already pricing in a strong future for Alphabet's AI, Cloud, and Waymo businesses, but advertising and Cloud must continue to carry the financial load as the company battles heavy capital spending, regulatory pressure, and AI disruption in search.
