Waymo's Commercial-Scale Robotaxi Network Unlocks Alphabet's Hidden Value
Alphabet's core business is often misunderstood by investors who see it as just a search-and-ads company with a cloud kicker. However, beneath this surface lies Waymo, Alphabet's commercial-scale robotaxi network that has already passed 500,000 fully autonomous rides per week in the first quarter.
With Alphabet leading a $16 billion investment round for Waymo announced in February 2026, it's clear that the company is committed to expanding its autonomy options. This investment allows Alphabet to operate at real scale and provides investors with a free ride on the autonomy option without having to pay growth-stock prices.
Alphabet's core business has been consistently delivering impressive results, including revenue growth of 24.2% year over year in Q2 FY2026 and EPS of $9.11 against a 2.88 estimate. Google Cloud grew 82% in the quarter, with a backlog near $460 billion after Q1.
With a return on equity of 35.70%, ROIC at 29.60%, and interest coverage at 175.5x on a debt-to-equity ratio of 0.143, Alphabet's balance sheet and valuation are doing the talking. The company has committed to $175 billion to $185 billion in 2026 capex without threatening the dividend, which was raised 5% to $0.22 per share quarterly.
