Google's massive data center project in Van Buren Township has hit a roadblock after Wayne County Executive Warren Evans vetoed $125 million in tax incentives. The county commission, however, may reverse his decision with a two-thirds vote.

The proposal was initially approved by the Van Buren Township officials in May and later passed by the county on September 15th. In return for the tax breaks, the township negotiated specific requirements regarding noise reduction, landscaping, and water use.

Van Buren Township Supervisor Kevin McNamara presented to the commission during the summer, urging members to pass the tax breaks and community benefits agreement. He pointed out that state law allows this type of tax break, giving the community power to enforce its terms.
