A Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft operated by WestJet experienced an in-flight GPS data discrepancy during its approach to Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) on September 16. The flight crew reported simultaneous 'GPS LEFT' and 'GPS RIGHT' invalid indications, which they alerted maintenance teams about before landing safely.
The incident occurred nearly three hours into the cross-country flight from Calgary International Airport (YYC). Modern commercial airliners like the Boeing 737 MAX 8 have redundant navigation suites, including Inertial Reference Systems (IRS), to ensure safe navigation even when primary GPS signals are degraded or invalid.
WestJet has not reported any injuries or secondary operational disruptions stemming from the event. The crew's proactive notification allowed maintenance personnel to perform diagnostics and address logging errors before the aircraft's next scheduled departure.
