Windows 11 Bug Causes Crashes in Apps and Games

Microsoft has acknowledged a new bug in Windows 11 that causes crashes in certain games and applications. The issue affects versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2, including the recent fall update 26H2. The problem arises when apps or games use Dolby Digital AC-3 audio decoding, leading to unexpected closures when adjusting volume or using specific audio functions.

According to Microsoft, the bug primarily impacts legacy applications that rely on Windows' built-in audio decoding. Modern applications are less likely to be affected. This issue is separate from the earlier USB audio problems reported in September.

The bug persists even after installing the optional September update KB5124010 for Windows 11 25H2, and upgrading to 26H2 does not resolve it. Microsoft attributes the problem to a deep-seated issue in the system's code base, affecting multiple versions of Windows 11.

Microsoft is aware of the problem and is working on a fix, which will be released in a future Windows update. The company has not provided a specific timeline for the resolution.
