Microsoft has released a patch for Windows 11 update KB5124008, which caused problems for users after its rollout last Tuesday. The update was meant to fix nearly 1,000 software bugs and vulnerabilities but instead triggered USB audio issues and broke functionality with the AI tool Claude Cowork and the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).

The issues were reported by enterprise customers and software developers who experienced problems with virtual machine functionality and Remote Desktop Services. The update also caused older USB Audio 1.0 peripherals to fail to emit sound or display an error message saying, 'This device cannot start (Code 10)'.

Microsoft has released a fix, KB5129195, which should download and install automatically on affected Windows 11 PCs as OS Builds 26200.9457 or 26100.9457. The patch is designed to fully resolve issues with Remote Desktop Services and virtual machines but only fixes a few symptoms of the USB Audio problems.
